Gracie Jiu-Jitsu: The Master Text
I ordered Gracie Jiu Jitsu: The Master Text a few weeks ago but haven't really gotten around to reading it until now.
I've always wanted to learn more Gracie Jiu Jitsu, but the majority of the books out there are primarily focused on MMA and the competition side of jiu jitsu. Helio Gracie has always maintained that the style that he developed was primarily intended for personal protection on the streets of Brazil. This along with the fact that this book was written by the man who developed Gracie Jiu Jitsu made me want to read this book.
There is a very interesting introduction and biography on Helio Gracie and the origins of Jiu Jitsu in Brazil and the development and evolution of Gracie Jiu Jitsu. The majority of the book is dedicated to self protection techniques. This book dispels the myth that Gracie Jiu Jitsu is all grappling with no stand up techniques at all; it is quite a well-rounded art with many similar techniques and concepts to Can-Ryu. This book will find a permanent spot on my reference shelf and I can see myself referring to this book many times over.
