Tonight we had an easy warmup consisting of breakfalls and then front, shin, and knee kicks on the medicine ball. I worked with Grant on the catch block and its use.

I then worked with Grant on bear hugs, front and rear, under and over the arms. This allowed us to put together all of the the individual techniques that we've been working on over the past few classes into escape techniques.

I finished off by doing some ground techniques; started by reviewing bridging and shrimping, then worked on escape from the full mount (someone straddling the chest) and then a "could know" technique just to give Grant a taste of what's to come at the more advanced level, working an armlock (kimura) submission when having someone in your guard. (pull uke from a postured position forward by grabbing lapels or back of head. uke will put hands on mat to prevent this. right hand grabs uke's left wrist. tori rolls up onto right shoulder/elbow, passes left arm over uke's left arm and back under uke's arm to grab his own wrist. tori lies back down, pulling uke with him. tori shrimps onto his left hip to bring his right leg across uke's back and applies armlock.)

No adults again, but we did have Jonathan, Christopher, Tony, and Michael (all of the Juniors) show up tonight.

We broke them into two groups, Sensei Mariedke worked with half of them on kicking while I worked with the other half on blocking drills. I did the same drills as we did on Monday night: the first 8 hand movements of te waza, kidney (elbow) blocks, and downward palm blocks (variation of a catch block). Half way through we switch groups.

I got some more books that I am going to be reading:

Modern Judo: The Complete Ju-Jutsu Library

and

The Path To The Black Belt

No adults showed tonight (again) and only one junior was present, so Sensei Mariedke and I worked with Jonathan. I reviewed breakfalls 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6 and then we did a bit of stretching. Worked the first 8 movements of te waza and catchblocks, shin kicks, groin kick, front kick, and roundhouse kicks. We did one child defense when the attacker picks the child up and puts them over his/her shoulder. defense is for the child to use the attackers clothing to pull themselves down their backside while yelling "this is not my parent"

side note: I saw this news item yesterday. My initial impression is that Curtis punched Hiel and caught him on the button and dropped him. Heil's head probably bounced of the concrete (several times?) which caused the head injuries that he died from. It'll be interesting to see where this case goes from here.

Most people weren't able to make class last night. As such, we had a small group; Mariedke, Colby, and me. Colby is new to jiu jitsu, but has been training in martial arts since he was 10 (he is in his early 30s).

i went through all of the stances, blocks, and punches with Colby as well as radial, BPO, and lateral femoral strikes. Colby is one of those people who doesn't feel pain. None of the pressure points phased him at all, even when using 30-40% power.

We finished up with two new takedowns for Colby: ankle-thigh and neck twist. we worked on these several times and then incorporated them into some wrist grab techniques.
